This is one of a series of poems reflecting my experience of living in Kolkata for six months during 2001 and 2002.

A different generation

The day before Diwali, the students –
in their jeans and polo shirts,
in their pastel salwar suits and platform sandals,
with their commerce textbooks, romances
and occasional mobile phones –
the day before Diwali, the students
relinquish the Coffee House
to intellectuals of a different generation,
who, with their black square-framed glasses
and khaki shirts and trousers,
make me wish I were twenty years older
and we were all young again.
